ProvenancePossibly painted for a palazzo in Venice; probably Francesco Artaria (1744–1808), Como and Venice; Villa Girola, near Blevio, Lake Como, Italy, from 1798; by descent, Domenico Artaria (1775–1842), inventoried in the Villa Girola, c. 1829; by descent, August Artaria (1807–1893), who upon the sale of the villa took it to Vienna, where it remained in the warehouse of the family firm, Artaria & Co., until rediscovered in 1900; [unknown dealer, Berlin]; purchased by [Galerie Charles Sedelmeyer, Paris, 1911, until 1927]; purchased by [Galerie Van Diemen, Berlin-Amsterdam-New York, 1927]; purchased by a private collector, New York, 1927 or 1928, probably William Robert Timken (1866–1949) and Lillian Timken (1881–1959), Croton-on-Hudson, New York, and following Mr. Timken’s death, New York City, until 1951; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, until 1980; [Christie’s, New York, June 5, 1980, no. 139]; [P. & D.
