graduate of Houston’s Yates High School, Louise Ozell Martin opened her own
studio in Houston’s Third Ward in 1946 and became known as the city’s “society
photographer,” contributing to Forward
Times and Informer, two African
American newspapers. Martin was assigned to cover the funeral of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., in Atlanta, the only African American woman among the corps
of press photographers. Here, she captured the honor guard around King’s casket
during the public memorial service at Morehouse College, his alma mater. Second
from the right is Jesse Jackson, holding the flag of the United Nations.
