DescriptionBill Brandt was an avid reader and believed that
a country was improved by its celebrated literature. A project to photograph
the poetic relationship between writers and their environment eventually led to
the book Literary Britain (1951),
which included 100 landscapes with excerpts from 51 renowned writers. Yorkshire Moors was printed next to a
quote by Charlotte Brontë writing about Emily Brontë: “My sister loved the
moors. . . She found in the bleak solitude many and dear delights; and not the
least and best-loved was—liberty.”
