In the late 1950s, the photographer William Klein set out to explore various cities around the globe. Aiming to capture each place’s unique energy and emotion, Klein chose to learn about each place while he worked. In his photographs, he embraced amateurish accidents–lopsided compositions, heads lopped off, blur, grain, and flare. These stylistic elements emphasize a vivid present moment, drawing the viewer into the exact time, place, and feeling of the image capture. “What would please me most,” Klein said, “is to make photographs as incomprehensible as life.”
