DescriptionInspired by Helen Frankenthaler’s example,
Kenneth Noland also became a leader among
the American Color Field artists who emerged
in the mid-1950s. He brought a spirit of
invention, exploration, and renewal to his
ongoing series of Circle paintings in particular.
He created approximately 200 works in this
series between 1956 and 1963, exploring the
tension between gesture and geometric order.
“My choice of color,” Noland stated, “is
an intuitive process. But intuition means
informed experience—you use color like
you use language.”
