Rather than training his camera on the sublime majesty of the American landscape—the actual falls in Post Falls, Idaho, for instance—Stephen Shore focused on seemingly banal subjects in small-town America during road trips in the 1970s. And rather than photographing in black-and-white, as nearly all fine art photographers did, Shore shot in color despite its association with advertising and snapshots. With these rebellious choices and a Pop sensibility honed as a youth in Andy Warhol’s famous Factory, Shore prompted viewers to take a second look at scenes that might at first seem commonplace. This image appeared in Shore’s 1982 book, Uncommon Places.
