DescriptionThe Josef Wagner whose name is engraved on this tall ale glass is likely the individual who emigrated from Breslau, Prussia (present-day Poland) in 1853. He arrived in Galveston and, in 1882, purchased a property in Round Top, Texas, from the heirs of Samuel K. Lewis. Although Wagner is often referred to as a cobbler for manufacturing shoes for the Confederacy, his family operated several businesses into the twentieth century, including a cotton gin and grain mills. In 1961, Hezel Ledbetter purchased the property, later selling it to Miss Ima Hogg, who made it the centerpiece of her extensive historic preservation efforts at Winedale.
