[1] At the time of this photograph, Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) worked for War Relocation Authority to document the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans. The photos she took were impounded by the U.S. government and not released to the public until 2006. This photograph was taken on May 9, 1942.
[2] Due to the sensitive nature of the images, prints from this time are exceedingly rare, although the original negative has been preserved at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), College Park, Maryland, since 1942. The negatives are now considered public domain. This print is from No. 537942 in NARA records.

Manzanar Relocation Center, Manzanar, California. One of the 80 baseball teams which have been formed in the three months that this War Relocation Authority center has been opened for evacuees of Japanese ancestry. Most of the playing is done in the wide firebreak between blocks of barracks.

At Wasalabad high above West Kabul. It has taken 26 men from the Mine Detection Centre and four de-mining dogs more than three months to clear mines from an area the size of a few soccer pitches. Kabul’s rapid expansion has increased pressure for building land. Mined areas that were once marginal are now in demand for house construction.
