[1] At the time of this photograph, Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) worked for War Relocation Authority to document the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans. The photos she took were impounded by the U.S. government and not released to the public until 2006. This photograph was taken on May 9, 1942.
[2] Due to the sensitive nature of the images, prints from this time are exceedingly rare, although the original negative has been preserved at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), College Park, Maryland, since 1942. The negatives are now considered public domain. This print is from No. 537637 in NARA records.
