[1] The labels on the reverse indicate that it was in the collection of Sir Hugh Walpole (1884–1941), an English novelist and a prominent patron and collector of art. After his death the finest works in his collection, other than those bequeathed to the Tate Gallery and the Fitzwilliam, were exhibited in London during April and May 1945; the exhibition also included works by Constable, Turner and Rodin.

[2] Following the dispersal of the collection of prominent art collector and patron Sir Hugh Walpole through Leicester Galleries in 1843, this drawing was purchased by Walpole’s friend Alan Bott, a World War I flying ace, journalist, editor, and publisher who founded Pan Books.
