ProvenanceEdmond de Goncourt (1822-1896) and Jules de Goncourt (1830-1870), artists, writers, and historians, Paris.18th-century and modern drawings and prints, Japanese prints (Lugt 6251) [1]; Their posthumous sale, [Danlos, Paris, 26-28 April 1897, lot 152 ('Très belle et rare épreuve à l'eau-forte pure et avant toutes lettres.')]; Private collection; [Susan Schulman Fine Art, Inc., New York, 2025]; purchased by MFAH, 2025.

[1] There are two different marks affied to the drawings in Goncourt brothers’ collection: L. 1080 and Lugt 6251. The less pronounced serifs of the letters and the presence of the dot are the differences between the second mark and the first, illustrated by F. Lugt in 1921. To date, there have never been found any examples of drawings bearing the L. 1089 mark on drawings acquired by the Goncourt brothers after 1862, while it is possible to find examples of drawings acquired before 1862 with this new mark. This mark was probably created after L. 1089. Under the notice on L. 1089, a few examples of drawings with the mark L. 6251, along with their date of entry into the Goncourt collection: Portrait of Miss Dangeville, by Maurice Quentin Delatour, given by one of the MArcilles in 1860 to the Goncourts (Goncourt sale 1897, no. 156; Paris, Musée du Louvre, Department of Graphic Arts, inv. RF 4099); Portrait of a Man, by Jacques Portail, acquired in 1864 (Goncourt sale 1897, no. 238; Paris Musée du Louvre, Department of Graphic Arts, inv. RF 2059); “At leaste be discreet,” by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, acquired in 1866 or shortly after the Malaussena sale (Goncourt sale 1897, no. 189; Paris Musée du Louvre, Department of Graphic Arts, inv. RF 3881); Portrait of a Woman (Aunt Rosalie), acquired in 1875 (Goncourt sale 1897, no. 82; Paris, Musée du Louvre, Department of Graphic Arts, inv. RF 3880).
