DescriptionThe Zangaki Brothers were among the first wave of Europeans to photograph Egypt during the 19th century. The brothers toured the length of the Nile with a horse-drawn darkroom van, making pictures of key architectural sites and monumental sculpture, including this picture of Medinet Habu—also known as the Temple of Ramses III—in Luxor. The brothers were supported by a bourgeoning market for pictures of Egypt, both as tourist souvenirs for Europeans on grand tour and for audiences in England and France.
