Peter Hujar is most frequently associated with his depictions of the bohemian arts scene in New York during the 1970s, including his portraits of subversive cultural figures and frank portrayal of gay life. However, Hujar brought the same fascination, sensitivity, and depth of engagement to making portraits of animal subjects that he did to humans. Spending a significant portion of his childhood living with his grandparents in semi-rural New Jersey, Hujar had early exposure to farm animals, and he continued to photograph them throughout his career.
