Description

Cultural and political shifts in the 1920s and 1930s led the world from one war into another. Yet, this time of upheaval was also marked by remarkable artistic productivity, as many photographers responded to the turmoil with new explorations of the medium. Soon these art-world innovations infiltrated the field of advertising photography. Solarization, high contrast, doubling, and innovative lighting provided an avant-garde, edgy flair to product images. John F. Collin’s The Comb utilizes dramatic lighting and an odd angle to make this everyday comb a thing of beauty and desire.
