Ever attuned to the way elements of his surroundings came together to form a picture, Henri Cartier-Bresson captured this collagelike image along the edges of a rural circus. As he traveled worldwide, his keen eye was matched by a humanist philosophy, and traveling through the American South in the early 1960s, he was surely conscious of the fraught state of race relations and the disparate futures these two youths might face.
This exceptionally large print was produced for Cartier-Bresson’s 1968 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
