Franz Hanfstaengl was a talented portraitist and a favorite artist of the German court. In 1848 he began lessons in “photography on paper,” quickly mastering the salt print process. Due to his skill and royal connections, he was named court photographer under King Ludwig II. This stunning portrait of Eugenie, daughter of the painter and architect Leo von Klenze (formerly the court architect to Ludwig I), demonstrates Hanfstaengl’s mastery over process and composition. Clutching a doll, the young Eugenie lounges on draped fabric in this studio setting. At right, a fluted column can be seen, a nod to Eugenie’s father, a Neoclassicist.
