DescriptionBorn in Brooklyn to immigrant parents from Eastern Europe, Joseph Schwartz made photographs of the city throughout the course of his career. In the 1930s, Schwartz connected with members of the Photo League, and he adopted their socially engaged approach that sought to use photography to document and bring attention to the socioeconomic conditions of everyday Americans. Drawing on their intense enthusiasm for the Brooklyn Dodgers depsite not having access to the stadium’s interior, Schwartz’s photograph depicts a group of boys climbing part of Ebbets Field in hopes of glimpsing their beloved players.
