DescriptionThroughout the colonial period, Chinese manufacturers made porcelain specifically designed for Western markets, but it was not until after the United States gained independence that the new nation traded directly with China, and they did so beginning in 1785 as the ship Empress of China returned with its cargo. As trade with China grew in importance during the late 1700s and early 1800s, more Americans purchased Chinese porcelain tablewares and decorative objects for their homes.
