1The scion of a successful German banking family established Britain since the early 1800s, Brandt started collecting in the 1940s and began buying in earnest towards the end of the 1950s, after which time he acquired drawings almost continually until his death. Though initially focused on contemporary art, Brandt grew increasingly interested in earlier work, and he eventually amassed one of the finest, most extensive collections of British drawings dating from 1650 to 1850; in particular, Brandt was a pioneering collector of neoclassical and romantic drawings.
