[Phoenix Ancient Art, Geneva/New York, June 15, 2004] [2];
Acquired by Frances Marzio, Houston, from the previous, June 15, 2004-2024 [3];
By bequest, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2024-Present
[1] Cited and illustrated in a publication without further information available: Trendall, A. and I. McPhee, Greek Red-Figured Fish-Plates, 14, Beiheft Antike Kunst (1987): p. 121, no. 39, color pl. C2. The later addenda to the previously referenced publication (Trendall and McPhee 1990, IVA/39, p. 49) mistakenly links this plate to another by the Binningen Painter that was sold at Sotheby’s on July 11, 1988, as lot 363, which was actually Trendall and McPhee no. IVA/38. The citation in the supplement for IVA/38, however, is not this piece. It is plausible that they had identified the fish plate in an auction catalog, but the details were not correctly printed. It has not been identified in a sales catalog at this time.
[2] Original invoice from Phoenix Ancient Art dates May 17, 2004 and lists multiple objects while a second invoice June 15, 2004 lists only this object (both in Object File). Object arrived at the MFAH as a temporary loan in May 2004 (Released 6/15/2004), having shipped from Switzerland.
[3] Per records in the Archives, this object was conserved July 29, 2004 by Jane C. Gillies. Offered by the estate of Frances Marzio (1947-2022) to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2023.
