The mixing of photographic imagery with either selective development of the print or ink embellishment was one strategy of turn-of-the-century photographers’ emphasis on the painterly potential of the medium and a way of distinguishing their work from that of commercial studios and Sunday “Kodakkers.” This picture, though, is also simply a delight—a reminder that even serious photographers sometimes just had fun.
