This picture is likely the work of Domenico Bresolin, best known as a painter of vedute (Venetian cityscapes). Here, the artist presents the view one might glimpse while strolling the streets and crossing the canals of the city. Spanning the canal in the distance but out of reach is one of the city’s most famous sights, the exquisite Bridge of Sighs. Built in 1600 to connect the courtrooms of the Doge’s Palace and the prison, it afforded the condemned their final view of Venice, of the beautiful canals and architecture—the living city—that Bresolin places in the foreground.
