In Volume 5. Sideways Thought, Mungo Thompson sourced 4,000 images from more than 50 books about Rodin sculptures to create a stop-motion animation in which individual sculptures seem to rotate in three dimensions. Accompanied by a rhythmic, minimal soundtrack, the quickly paced sequence emphasizes the multiplicity of Rodin’s output. Rodin’s insistence on the tactility of the medium and the importance of the sculptor’s touch cannot hold up to the dizzying array of sculptures on the screen in which single figures and motifs appear in multiple media and at different scales numerous times over.
