ProvenanceThe artist, c. 1898; Henry August Koelsch Jr. (1890-1938), by 1917 [1]; Francita Stuart Koelsch Ulmer, to 2022; given to MFAH, 2022

[1]. Henry August Koelsch Jr. was born on March 17,1890 in New York City and died in December 1938 at age 46 in London, England, where he was in charge of banking operations for the National City Bank of New York (now Citicorp). According to donor Francita Stuart Koelsch Ulmer, Koelsch brought these paintings with him when the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution spurred him to flee Russia, where he had been working to establish a bank branch. He left the country via Siberia. Koelsch and his wife, Beulah Anne Hubbard Koelsch, married November 22, 1918, and they later lived with their three sons on Princes Gate in London near Exhibition Road and Kensington Park. One of Koelsch’s sons, Philip, was Francita’s first husband, which is how she came to be in possession of the paintings.
