(1). Ileana Sonnabend was a Romanian-American art dealer of 20th-century art. The Sonnabend Gallery opened in Paris in 1962 and was instrumental in making American art of the 1960s, particularly Pop Art, known in Europe. Upon her death in October 2007, her heirs sold portions of her large, important collection of postwar art through private transactions.
(2). The daughter of Ileana Sonnabend and Italian-American art dealer Leo Catelli, Nina Castelli Sundell became steward of the many masterworks in the Sonnabend Collection after her parents died. In 2015, a year after Sundell’s own death, Christie’s held the auction “Works from the Collection of Ileana Sonnabend and the Estate of Nina Castelli Sundell,” which encompassed painting, sculpture, drawings, and prints.
