Description

Adrien Tournachon, brother of the famous photographer Nadar, photographed the prizewinning animals at national agricultural competitions in France during the late 1850s and early 1860s. His photographs of cattle, horses, donkeys, and sheep would have been of interest to those involved in animal husbandry as records of particularly fine specimens and to artists as models of animals for their work. The inscription accompanying this photograph notes that Catharina won second prize in the category of Pyrenees Donkeys.
