Not much is known about the Swiss artist Mirjam Schwarz, yet her work conveys the energy and experimentation typical of modernist photographers. The history of photography is littered with passive portrayals of women in the landscape, created almost exclusively by men. In the 1970s, however, the growing feminist movement inspired women artists to reclaim this standard. These three images by Schwarz juxtapose a hand with plant blades, reexamining ideas of the female body and landscape, both fields upon which many meanings are written.
