In Emi Anrakuji’s series e hagaki (Picture Postcards), the artist’s own photographic imagery is inkjet-printed onto vintage postcards originally collected by her grandfather. Anrakuji photographs her body alongside props and textiles to construct images that playfully interact with those on the postcards. The resulting pictures are dreamlike scenes in which geometric abstraction and narrative ambiguity collide. Through her experimentation, Anrakuji considers complicated issues of family history and photography’s role in representing cultural identity.
