Armando Salas Portugal photographed the landscape of his native country, from its deserts to its forests and volcanos (he was an avid mountaineer), and its architecture, from Mayan ruins to the modernist constructions of Luis Barragán. In this surprisingly large and delicately hand-colored view of the so-called Nunnery at Uxmal, Salas Portugal imbues his picture with a Romantic sense of lost civilization. Far from mere documentation, the picture is framed from a low vantage point, with the Mayan structures seen below a stormy sky.
