For more than 50 years, Gay Block has used photography to explore issues of self and communal identity. The distance afforded by her camera allowed her to freely explore surprising facets of her subjects, yet, they were all born from the artist’s need for self-discovery and understanding. In her series Out in Santa Fe, Block turned to members of the queer community, working with individuals, couples, and families to create a body of powerfully affirming portraits. The portraits emphasize the sitters’ self-presentations and are generally set in their homes or a familiar community space.
