In 1989 Gay Block photographed the young women spending the summer at Camp Pinecliffe, where Block and her daughter had each been campers. Block approached each subject individually, creating relaxed and telling portraits. “I loved the innocence and promise in their faces,” Block wrote. “I saw in them what I imagined as their future selves.” The series took on new meaning 25 years later, when the artist tracked down those same campers to re-photograph and interview them. The resulting diptychs reveal the time elapsed between carefree camp days and adulthood, the changes life brought for each of them, and the core character that remains.
