Like the illusionistic painted ceilings of Baroque churches that seem to open up to the heavens above stories of fanciful architecture, Georges Rousse’s photographs trick the eye into believing two conflicting realities: the physical space that one knows is present, and the scene crafted by the artist. Here, a topographic map—itself a flat representation of three-dimensional reality—seems to hover in a spare, white room and flight of stairs, thanks to Rousse’s careful painting and perspective.
