Description

In addition to a distinguished career in civil service, Henry Taylor (1800–1886) was a widely recognized poet and playwright, and Cameron was an enthusiastic admirer of his work. Among her most frequent photographic models, he posed for her 32 times, for straightforward portraits such as this one, but also as Friar Laurence with Juliet, Prospero with Miranda, and Ahasuerus with Queen Esther. Here, both Cameron’s image and subtitle—“a Rembrandt”— make clear that she knew, admired, and sought to emulate great art of the past, linking her work in the still-new medium of photography to the traditions of fine art.

ProvenanceGiven by the artist to her daughter Julia and son-in-law Charles Norman; by descent to his son Archibald Cameron Norman; by descent to his son Charles Lloyd Norman; by descent to his son Charles Wake Norman; by descent to his son to William Norman; by descent to his son Stephen Norman; [consigned to Hans P.
