Description

One of Cameron’s nieces described the experience of being “pressed into the service of the camera” as a child by her aunt. “Dressed in dark clothes, stained with chemicals from her photography (and smelling of them too), with a plump eager face and a voice husky, and a little harsh, yet in some way compelling and even charming . . . we never knew what Aunt Julia was going to do next . . . nor did anyone else.” Here, Margie Thackeray, the young niece and adopted daughter of Cameron’s good friend, the writer Anne Thackeray, meets the camera’s gaze with surprising determination.

ProvenanceGiven by the artist to her daughter Julia and son-in-law Charles Norman; by descent to his son Archibald Cameron Norman; by descent to his son Charles Lloyd Norman; by descent to his son Charles Wake Norman; by descent to his son to William Norman; by descent to his son Stephen Norman; [consigned to Hans P. Kraus, New York, 2012]; purchased by MFAH, 2021.
