Although Cameron sometimes costumed and posed her sitters amid scenery to illustrate a particular literary, historical, or biblical subject, at other times she merely titled her pictures to suggest qualities she sensed in the person before her lens. Here, for instance, she must have detected a Christ-like innocence and soulfulness in five-year-old Margie Thackeray.
