Julia Margaret Cameron blended an unorthodox technique, a profoundly spiritual sensibility, and a Pre-Raphaelite–inflected aesthetic, aiming to record more than the “mere map-making and skeleton rendering of feature and form,” that she felt most conventional portrait photographers sought. She photographed the Oxford-educated Frank Charteris (1844–1870), son of the conservative politician Lord Elcho, in the summer of 1867 while he was vacationing on the Isle of Wight, where the Camerons lived. Charteris was killed in a shooting accident just three years after this portrait, at the age of 26.
