Object Type
ProvenancePierre Defer (1798-1870); by bequest to his son-in-law, Henri Dumesnil (1823-1898), called Defer-Dumesnil collection, Paris, 19th century1; [Susan Schulman Fine Art, Inc., New York] as of 2021-2022; purchased by MFAH, 2022

1The Defer-Dumesnil collection was formed in the first half of the 19th century by Pierre Defer (1798-1870), who had devoted his life to the study of prints and old drawings and traded prints and drawings as his father had done. Defer is the author, in addition to the numerous sales catalogues he wrote starting in 1831, of the reference work General Catalog of Public Sales of Paintings and Prints. Publication unfortunately stopped in 1868 with the letter D, but the manuscript still exists, almost complete. After his death, Defer’s collection passed into the hands of his son-in-law, Henri Dumesnil (1823-1898), an enlightened amateur. Despite attractive offers, he jealously guarded the collection entrusted to his care, a collection which included, besides the drawings and prints, beautiful paintings, rare books, and objets d’art. Most of his drawings and prints were sold after his death.
