Description

In addition to the scientists, artists, writers, and philosophers who were part of Cameron’s intellectual circle, she took advantage of the opportunity when visiting notables came within her orbit. When the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882), author of Paul Revere’s Ride and The Song of Hiawatha, came to the Isle of Wight in 1868 to visit Charles Darwin, Alfred Tennyson delivered him to Cameron’s studio with the warning, “You will have to do whatever she tells you. I will come back soon and see what is left of you.”

ProvenanceGiven by the artist to her daughter Julia and son-in-law Charles Norman; by descent to his son Archibald Cameron Norman; by descent to his son Charles Lloyd Norman; by descent to his son Charles Wake Norman; by descent to his son to William Norman; by descent to his son Stephen Norman; [consigned to Hans P.
