ProvenanceWahba Family, 1970-2021; by descent to son, Jeffrey Wahba, 2021; given to MFAH, 2021

According to donor Jeffrey Wahba, this drawing was one of a group of six works purchased by his parents in Mexico in 1970, all of which eventually passed to Jeffrey as part of his parents’ estate. At the time it was offered to the museum, Manifestantes was attributed to Lucas Johnson, a contemporary of Cuevas who created the other five works in the Wahba gift (2021.578, 2021.603-606). Subsequent research and comparison of the inscriptions on Manifestantes with those on known works by Cuevas showed that this drawing should be credited to him, not Johnson.
