David Alekhuogie uses beauty to contradict stereotypes about sites of violence—both specific geographic locations, and more broadly, the violence assigned to the Black male body. Body-based landscapes, works in Alekhuogie’s series To Live and Die in LA present black-and-white photographs of the hips and waists of Black men, re-photographed with the flora and fauna found on particular street corners in Los Angeles where violence has occurred. Presented in carefully constructed, handmade frames, the photographs in this series celebrate the mortal beauty present within the body and city.
