Ernest Cole’s book House of Bondage, in which this photograph appeared, is a searing indictment of South African apartheid by an artist who personally knew and experienced its daily humiliations and horrors. For the outside world, the book, published in New York in 1967 and London in 1968, was the period’s most powerful visualization of apartheid, coming as the antiapartheid movement was gaining worldwide attention and strength.
