From California to New York, Kris Graves aimed his camera at the catalysts of the summer 2020 protests, including Confederate statues and symbols across the South, and their aftermath. In Richmond, Virginia, Graves photographed the prominent statue of Robert E. Lee inscribed with layers of graffiti and covered by a projection of George Floyd, who was murdered by Minneapolis police officers on May 25, 2020. The image highlights the collective reclamation and repurposing of a monument dedicated to a racist legacy into a public site of mourning and community solidarity.
