From California to New York, Kris Graves aimed his camera at both the catalysts of summer 2020 protests—Confederate statues and symbols across the South—and the aftermath. In Richmond, Virginia, Graves photographed the statue of Robert E. Lee inscribed with layers of graffiti and covered by a projection of George Floyd, who was killed by Minneapolis police officers on May 25, 2020. The image highlights the colorful graffiti and piercing projection while the Confederate general is encased in shadow and presented against the swiftly moving clouds, signaling the passage of time and the dawn of a new era.
