Description

Samantha Box beautifully describes her complex, layered image: “This photograph is a record the life—in 2006—of Sylvia’s Place, an emergency shelter for LGBTQ youth that was located in basement of the Metropolitan Community Church, in Midtown Manhattan. . .. Despite the short time that they were together, and the relative transient lengths of their stays, the young people who called the shelter ‘home’ formed intense bonds, creating a safe space for themselves and their community, caring for each other at a time in the face of crushing societal discrimination based on the intersection of their race, class, gender and sexuality.”
