Inspired by industrial remnants, unfinished construction projects, propaganda billboards, and carnival decorations, Adrián Fernández collaborated with architects, engineers, and computer specialists to combine an analog, lens-based photograph (the landscape) with a digitally constructed image of the back of a fictional structure. It is easy to imagine this structure, set along the Malecón, Havana’s seaside esplanade, as the remains of a once-grand declaration, facing north like a challenge to the U.S. and as a greeting to anyone arriving in Havana by sea. Fernández intends this image to be a metaphor for today’s teetering ruins of the Cuban Revolution’s grand ambitions.
