Description“McDonald’s modern day care center keeps the boys out of my hair and
lets me have a moment to myself,” reads this picture’s caption in Bill Owens’s
2004 book Leisure. With a knack for finding profoundly strange incidents
in the everyday life, Owens applied his biting humor and sharp social critique
to the prevailing style of documentary photography in the 1970s. “Turn me
loose on the middle class,” he once declared. “I understand the culture. I
speak the language. Let me exploit them!”
