In his series Chattel: A Portrait Study, Kevin Horan explores the possibilities of photographic portraiture for animal subjects. After moving to the country, Horan applied his depth of experience making portraits of humans to his new animal neighbors, sensitively photographing each individual to capture their unique qualities and portray them with a sense of reverence typically reserved for humans. The beauty and emotional depth of the pictures speaks to portraiture’s power to forge connections and empathy between subject, photographer, and viewer—even when doing so requires crossing the species line.
