DescriptionIn 1906, Edward Sheriff Curtis embarked on a 30-year project to photograph the indigenous peoples of the United States and Alaska—an endeavor that eventually comprised 40,000 images of more than 80 Native American tribes. Because Curtis often directed and sometimes costumed his subjects to fit an idealized vision, his images are constructions of mythic Native Americans frozen in time. Still, Curtis’s photographs remain the most comprehensive Western representation of early 20th-century Native culture and thus have been a persistent shaper of the image of indigenous peoples in the popular imagination of non-Native Americans.
