Martina Bacigalupo entered the Gulu Real Art Studio in Northern Uganda looking to have film developed, but left with a different project in mind. The studio’s owner, Obal Denis, explained that the cut-out portraits scattered about the studio had been taken to create identification cards. With the permission of Denis, Bacigalupo took dozens of these photographs and arranged them in groups. Though they lack faces, each picture conveys the individuality of its subject. Yet the dramatic cutting of the portraits also suggests the region’s troubled identity and long history of conflict. The project presents these found photographs as cultural objects with multiple stories to tell.
