Latin American ArtObject Type
by Rhod Rothfuss’s irregular canvases, Freire sought to produce concrete, autonomous
sculptures that a viewer could manipulate. Here, she transforms industrial materials
into a play of line in space. The hinged pieces of painted iron produce
hard-edged, geometric forms that unfold in different directions. Like Kosice’s Röyi, also on view, this structure
embraces interactivity to merge art with everyday life, a key aim of the
avant-garde’s utopian impulse in Latin America and Europe.
ProvenanceThe artist; Estate of Maria Freire; [co-owned by Sammer Gallery, Miami and Cecilia de Torres, Ltd., New York]; purchased by MFAH, 2019.
