DescriptionHarking back to “bird’s-eye view” maps of the past, Sohei Nishino’s Diorama
Map
, Tokyo assembles more than 5,000 photographs taken by the artist
during countless walks crisscrossing the city. Shot on 35 mm film, printed as
contact sheets, cut, and collaged into a single composition before being
re-photographed and printed at a large scale, the map resulting from Nishino’s
labor-intensive process is experiential rather than geographically accurate.
The city’s major landmarks are there, but so are endless details—apartment
blocks and commercial signage, highways, trains, and river traffic, parks, and
markets—that make up the true fabric and feel of the city.
